I truly believe that 90% of little girls (at least once in their life) pretend to be a bride. Some women dream of it their entire life. And for the brides that I know, when they become a future bride, planning the wedding is anything but simple. The thought and creativity that goes into planning a wedding is incredible, and it really shines through in the details.

The details…OH how I LOVE the details. Rings, Bracelets, Beading, Ribbon, Texture, you name it, I like it! Details truly tell the story.

During Bridal Sessions I really like to take a moment to photograph the details; every bride is special and their dress is a reflection of who they are! I believe there really is a “perfect” dress for each and every bride.

The location and flowers really make a difference. They create a mood and set the tone for a couple’s personality. Thank you to the brides who have allowed me to post these images prior to their wedding day & bridal session post. I really appreciate you sharing your details with other brides who can become inspired by your impeccable taste.

When I was little she called me “little one”; she would gather me in her lap, and I would admire the beautiful snow white curls that covered her head. Her laugh fills a room and her memory is better than mine still.

We call her “Mama Nita” and she’s the first woman I know, at age 90, who emails weekly, sits indian style in her green comfy chair, works out daily, and makes every attempt she can to give (selflessly) to others including her friends and family. OH..and she’s an INCREDIBLE cook.

When I grow up, I want to be just like her.

Last night when my aunt, cousin, and I went to visit, I sat and thought of how truly lucky I am. Lucky to be loved, and to have the ability to love back. My Mama Nita still calls me “little one” and I still love to pull on her arm like I did when I was young.

It’s funny how being around her makes me feel safe, happy, and blissfully content.

I can only wish that one day I am half the woman she is. She’s smart, she’s beautiful, she’s strong, and she’s selfless.

She’s definitey Loved.

When they look at each other, a warm/loving smile creeps across both of their faces; when he sees her for the first time, he sheds a tear, when they step in front of family, friends, and loved ones for the first time they are overwhelmed with passion, joy, & and excitement. And it’s my job to anticipate these moments and be ready for them.

Every time I approach a shoot, I am in deep anticipation. And it’s a balance; because I have to document moments as they are happening and in my mind anticipate what’s going to happen next. But always, I have to be sure not to have pre-conceived notions but to be aware and ready.

When Brad and I began to make our trip home from our 6 week work/play adventure to the west coast, we took a turn, toward the Grand Canyon. When we arrived it was after 10:00PM, and because we were too spontaneous to have made reservations, we decided to hang out by the South Rim of the Canyon. Lucky for us, despite the below 40 degree weather, there was a meteor shower occurring that night. We wished on more shooting stars then than in all my life combined.

And we waited……….well, Brad slept, so I waited…..and anticipated the sunrise. And it was so worth the wait.

I made sure that my tripod was set up and ready well before 4:15 AM to get the first shot as the beautiful blue sky began to creep over the horizon.

It was COLD…SOOOO cold. But again, so worth the wait. (Well, at least for me!!) I’m not sure if he would agree.

As light began to show, for the first time we were able to actually see what once was a completely pitch black dark whole that we could only sense the depth of by the wind and echo of the canyon. And it was overwhelmingly beautiful.

My favorite moment, one that I couldn’t have anticipated was when the sun began to transform the view. The edges of the rocks began to create shadows and the depth of the canyon seemed endless. Yes, I plan to have this blown up into a LARGE canvas print.

As the temperature warmed and Brad began to appreciate our waking up at the crack of dawn without breakfast or coffee, he crept to the edge of the canyon and just observed. I love this moment and the sun flare ROCKS. (I know some of you may/may not be a huge proponent of sun flare, but I think it really works here!) Thanks for sharing in the sunrise.

Decisions, decisions, decisions…”What should my wedding colors be? Oh, I should do this!…or maybe I shouldn’t. Yes, well…maybe not. I LOVE this…oh, but I like that, too!” Does this sound familiar as you’re planning your wedding?!

Lately, I’ve been meeting with so many wonderful couples and potential clients, some now officially my clients, and I truly feel for you guys!!! There’s SO much planning to be done before a wedding and I can only imagine how difficult it is choosing your photographer. One of the most important things to remember when choosing a wedding photographer, or any photographer for that matter, is finding someone that you connect with and can create a relationship with.

I have been SO fortunate to have nothing but INCREDIBLE clients (maybe I’m slightly biased)….but I truly feel it’s because I’ve trusted my instincts when meeting with them and they have done the same.

During your wedding planning and on your wedding day, you will be talking to and interacting with each of your vendors frequently, especially your photographer!! And for me, there’s nothing better than snapping that final image and walking away knowing that I’ve made lifelong friends.

I always tell my clients that this is THEIR day! Your vendors should match your style and personality because YOUR day is a reflection of who you are as a couple and a celebration of your love together! And SO when you’re looking for someone, my advice is this:

Find someone who matches your vision & style of photography.

Learn about their technique for shooting throughout the day and how they plan to interact with you on your wedding day.

MAKE A CONNECTION! Search for someone you connect with and establish a relationship.

Brad always seems to connect with the ladies. This was during the bridal preparation for Lauren and this is her M.O.H. Victoria.

I was so confused ….and flattered when they asked a guest at the wedding to take a picture with my camera. And then they grabbed me for a picture of all of us in their album! Katy and Armand were AMAZING clients married a few months back at the Louisiana museum.

And this is me!…shooting away before Jon & Lauren’s wedding.

When I jumped out of bed this morning (well, at least closer to a jump than normal) I was ready to go.

I.am.not.a.morning.person.

So, when THIS morning, I jumped out of bed, I knew it would be a good day. I ate a bowl of Honey Nut Cheerios (my favorite) and my mind starting going 100mph as soon as my spoon picked up the last grouping of cheerios. You see, for the past 5 days, I have been glued to my computer for Creative LIVE. If you’re not familiar with what that is, it’s a LIVE stream for photography, computer, and graphics seminars.

This weekend, rockstar, Jasmine Star & partner/husband JD was featured; and the opportunity to watch her in action in this way was unprecedented. For 5 days, I stayed all eyes on the screen as she talked about her process, inspiration, and actually shot a live wedding. It was a little odd being able to watch someone’s most personal and memorable moment of their lives over the internet, but I cried all the same.

I am addicted to photography (but I assume the word passionate sounds better so we’ll use this word instead). I am PASSIONATE about photography; and any opportunity that I have to learn, I’ll take it. This past year has been a worldwind of workshops, organizations, meetings, & seminars and I have been nothing but blown away by the positivity of the industry (especially in the Lafayette/Baton Rouge/New Orleans areas) and the overall sense of leadership.

I know I am happy. For once, I can honestly say that God has led me right where I need to be. I am so thankful for the opportunity to wake up (typically more slowly than today) everyday excited to work. Ok…so my intention of this blog was to write the top 5 things I learned this weekend: (in no particular order)

1. I can never forget to be fearless and unafraid to take risks and create unique works of Art

2. Wedding Photography is 100% my calling.

3. I must learn to be more patient, even with myself.

4. I am only me; I cannot or do not want to be anyone other than who am I, and allow this to inform my work & my vision.

5. Beyond the stress, planning, and organization, up to the point of their wedding, the wedding day is by far the most important day of this couple’s life. And I am honored to be chosen to photograph these moments, these memories, and these couples as they embark on their journey together.

So, here’s to continuing to be inspired and taking part in many more memorable wedding days! Have a great Monday!

Check out the Screen Shot of Jasmine at Laura & Billy’s wedding above!

To say I like to travel would be a lie, I LOVE to travel. It gives me an opportunity to see new places, to become inspired, and to broaden my horizons. I am still SO passionate about architecture, so Brad and I really enjoy visiting the landmarks in different cities. And call me crazy, but there are SO many times that I’ll see a location and think, “Oh wow…I wish I could bring this home and use it as a location for a bridal or an engagement session.”

For example, the graffiti below…WOW WOW WOW!!!! I seriously flipped when I saw this location. I just kept telling Brad over and over how much I wished I could bring this home with me.

And yes, the colors were truly this vivid. Isn’t it absolutely beautiful?! In my eyes, this is truly art and takes lots of talent.

Couldn’t you see a pure white gown in front of this location? I love the play between something pure and innocent in a location such as this.

And there was literally graffiti EVERYWHERE in downtown Los Angeles. I was blown away by the creativity!

This is an incredible project designed by Joel Breaux + his partner. It’s known as the Vortex Plaza if you’re interested in checking it out.

My understanding of the Vortex Plaza is that it reflects those moments of emergency and release of help from Paramedics, Police, Firefighters, and so many others who dedicate their lives to saving others.

Joel Breaux + his partner are known for their ability to manipulate text and graphics and make a TRULY powerful statement.

So, you will never believe what this is. It is a high school; yes a place where 16, 17, & 18 year olds learn. I wonder if there are cheerleaders and football players at this school…

This glass and steel structure above is the entrance to the school; Brad and I were amazed….we just kept saying “Wow” over and over again. It truly is a beautiful building and I couldn’t imagine the intensity of learning here.

And the Cathedral of the Angels is the architecture featured above. It’s an incredible Church; the power and calming energy as soon as you walk in the door is overwhelming. I find it so amazing the way that architecture can affect people’s behavior & emotions.

Just as I walked past this window, I realized that when I was at the perfect angle, it looked as if the Angels were touching the District 9 building.

And the lighting in the church…was so surreal.

This is one of my favorite moments in the details…there were large…LARGE fabric banners hung in the back of the church. And this image is absolutely stunning.

And I saved this image of the church for last because I was so touched by the moment. This man, kneeling down, walked…on his knees…all the way down the church aisle to the crucifix. When he reached the crucifix, he bowed his head and he prayed as he rested his hands on the statue of the Lord. It was the most touching moment to experience.

And here I am! I was photographing inside of the Vortex Plaza’s rotating center and couldn’t get over the reflections.

I love the sleek, contemporary feel of the Gallery Wraps; the way the canvas wraps around the frame and creates a modern look for a print. When I first decided to bring new products into my line, the Gallery Wrap was a definite must. And although I love the way that a traditional 16×20 framed print of a bride looks at a wedding reception, I also admire the gallery wrap that says she is simply modern.

I have had SO many people stop me and say….”Is that a painting?!” And it does look that way, like a piece of art..except that it’s a print.

I absolutely love the way the gallery wraps allow the print to show all the way around the frame; the detail of the print showing on all four sides.

By the way, thank you Morgan for being such an incredible model for the photograph above. Without this photo, I wouldn’t be able to show others 1. Bridals CAN be done at night 2. The way a deep red or high contrast color truly POPS on the gallery wraps.

And thank you, Ellen, for being such a wonderful client. She was my “mystery bride” when I posted this silhouette of her prior to her wedding day. Her bridal portrait made such a beautiful canvas print.

If you don’t know this by now, then let me tell you, I am definitely into the details: the way a binding is sewn, or the quality of a cover material, and in this case the corners and the way the image covers the sides and corners of the wrap.

The canvas makes a texture look particular interesting and REALLY come to life!

Feel free to continue browsing through the products section of my blog and continue following as I post more items in the future. Have a great day!

Well…not my favorite things, but Julie Andrews definitely likes them.

As the stormclouds started to fill the sky and the day became gloomy, I started to worry that we weren’t going to be able to follow through with Mariah’s session….on her birthday! We’ve had this session scheduled for MONTHS now, and there was no way I was going to miss it. And Erica (Mariah’s AMAZING mom) wasn’t either. So…we did it anyway. And I’m so happy we did…

Although primarily what you see on my blog are weddings, what I love the most about what I do really isn’t the type of work but the moments. Whether it’s a glimpse of love, laughter or even…at times, sadness….these memories are the reason I LOVE photography! And I feel like Mariah’s session contained so many special moments of growth and learning.

Like the moment when she first felt rain…or noticed her reflection in the glass. These are SUCH special moments and I’m so happy I was there to capture them as she grows.

She doesn’t seem to mind spending her birthday full of attention, balloons, and cupcake cookies, does she?!!!

I LOVE LOVE LOVE her here….she was SO intrigued by her reflection, the glass, and the light bouncing off of the museum.

This is Henry….POOR Henry. I think she loves him TOO much sometimes…lol

And yet another sweet moment of simply Mariah…

If you know me…I mean really know me, then you know how much I cry. Whether I’m happy or sad, or tired, or excited…yes, I don’t hesitate to shed a tear. I have a soft heart even though I try to hide it at times by being strong….so don’t be surprised if we’re working together and you see me shed a tear or two. It’s just the way I am…

To more tears of joy and more special moments held still,

Catherine

Days like today, I realize that I am fortunate. I am blessed and I am loved. Days like today, despite the bad, when things don’t go just as planned (because everyone KNOWS how much I love to plan)….and when there’s disappointment and heartache, those are days that I am challenged to focus on the positive.

When people say, “Everything happens for a reason,”…I have a hard time believing them when I don’t quite know what that reason is yet. And when they say, “Out of all Bad, there is Good….” it’s hard to wait for the good when you’re as impatient as I am!

But today, for me…there was good.

I had two wonderful meetings today; both with clients that I am ecstatic to begin working with. I am thankful everyday for the couples and clients that I have had the honor of photographing.

And I am content…because I have love. When I came home today, I found this. ….A BEAUTIFUL bouquet of not red (They know me so well) but ORANGE + YELLOW roses! My heart is filled. No matter happens in the world, I am content. Because I have an amazing family, wonderful friends, and an incredible man who truly live the definition of love.
